00/1 - British Cape Renard Tower 2000

Julian Freeman-Attwood (with Crag Jones and Skip Novak). February-March 2000

The ascent of the N Face of this 747m tower (actually a separate island) on the edge of Antarctica has become something of an obsession for this 3-man team, despite the major logistical problems entailed in even reaching the area. This year, after climbing some 20 pitches of E 1/2 rock and Scottish III to V, they reached a blank wall some 100 metres below the summit which would not be climbable without bolts, which they were not prepared to use. They were more successful on nearby Wiencke Island, where they made probably the second ascent of Monte Italia, 1097m.
