In 1999, an expedition (99/19, reported in AJ Vol 105) to the Arwa area of the Garhwal succeeded in climbing the Tower but failed on the Spire, 6193m. Using knowledge gained on that earlier trip by Cool, this team first made unsuccessful attempts at routes on the North Face and the Central Buttress before turning their attention to the East Ridge. Here they were more fortunate, and all but Wills (who was unwell) reached the summit by an 800m TD route.
