08/06 - British Phari Lapcha (Machermo) 2008

James Thacker with Andrew Turner (November 2008)

Phari Lapcha (aka Machermo, 6017m) stands adjacent to the well trodden route to Gokyo, and this pair hoped to climb a new route on the LHS of its North face. However, at approximately half-height, they encountered unconsolidated snow and very difficult mixed ground. They therefore retreated and turned their attention to the north side of Dawa Peak (aka Phari Lapcha West, 5977m) on which they made probably the third ascent of Snotty’s Gully (ED1 first climbed by Bracey and Bullock on MEF Ref 06/23.
