The 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest is an important landmark for the MEF as well as a milestone of human endeavour - a fine example of an accomplishment by a highly focussed team, and the outstanding national and commonwealth success that coincided with the Coronation.
Substantive plans to celebrate this 50th anniversary are already in progress. A Royal Gala evening is scheduled on Thursday 29th May 2003 at the Odeon Cinema, Leicester Square. Her Majesty The Queen and HRH Prince Philip have indicated their provisional acceptance, and the plans for the celebrations were discussed recently at a private audience with Prince Philip. This will be a major opportunity for the MEF to demonstrate its longstanding commitment to mountain and scientific exploration and to encourage future generations.
In addition to a reprint of 'The Ascent of Everest', signed by the team, there will be several radio and television programmes, an Everest Exhibition, a first class postage stamp, suggested to the Royal Mail by the MEF, and first day covers.
The MEF Fundraising Appeal will target first those who have benefited from grants in years gone by. These have enabled UK and New Zealand expeditions to keep in the forefront of mountain exploration internationally, and with minimal administrative expenses - a fine example of a British charity making a major statement, and an opportunity for the Foundation to raise funds outside mountaineering.
On Everest itself, the MEF has endorsed The Mount Everest 50th Anniversary Expedition to be led by Iain Peter. His team plans to repeat the 1953 South Col route using equipment similar to that used 50 years ago - and we hope, if they are able to secure funding, that the climb will be televised.
