ANNUAL REVIEW 2003 - 2004

The 50th Anniversary of the First Ascent of Mount Everest is an historic landmark - not only as a milestone of human endeavour, but also for the Mount Everest Foundation itself. It was the first ascent of Everest that led to the MEF, the only organisation established specifically to support the exploration of the earth's mountain areas.

The MEF is celebrating the anniversary at the end of May 2003. The Royal Gala 'Endeavour on Everest' takes place at the Odeon Cinema, Leicester Square on 29th May - the anniversary of the first ascent. Veterans from the 1953 team will be speaking as well as leading British mountaineers - Sir Chris Bonington, Doug Scott and Stephen Venables. Sir David Attenborough is presenting these shows both in the afternoon and the evening. HM The Queen and the MEF Patron, HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh will be guests of the MEF at the evening performance, together with other members of the Royal Family. 'Endeavour on Everest' is followed by a Reception at Spencer House, St James's.

There are many other Everest-related events including a limited edition reprint of John Hunt's 'The Ascent of Everest' incorporating signatures of the original team, and the publication of a number of other new books, including 'Everest' by George Band, himself a veteran of 1953, an official history of Everest written for the MEF. A Souvenir Karabiner, a First Class Postage Stamp (with First Day Covers) and many radio and TV programmes and newspaper features will also record the event.

The MEF Leaders' Appeal has targeted those who have benefited from grants in years gone by. These grants have enabled UK and New Zealand expeditions to keep in the forefront of mountain exploration internationally, and with minimal administrative expenses. This is a fine example of a British charity making a major statement, and an opportunity for the Foundation to seek funds outside mountaineering. Over £20,000 has already been raised in this way.
