CHANGES TO MEF GRANT APPLICATIONS

Closing dates for receipt of MEF grant applications have long been a bone of contention, many people asking why they must be so far in advance of the Screening Committee meetings.

Acknowledging that expeditions can now be organised in a much shorter time scale than in the past, at a recent meeting of the Committee of Management it was agreed that closing dates should be relaxed by one month. Hence the 31st August closing date will change to 30th September and the 31st December date to 31st January. The dates on which the Committees meet will remain unchanged - the Screeners in early November and early March, with the Committee of Management about one month later. The new dates take immediate effect (ie: for expeditions planned in 2011) and supersede dates quoted in existing paperwork, which will be updated as soon as possible.

A further – even more major – change was also agreed, revising the way that grant applications are to be submitted from ‘paper’ to ‘electronic’. Details have still to be worked out and will be advised as soon as possible, but it is hoped that this change can be introduced in time for all 2012 expeditions.

It is therefore more important than ever that anyone planning an expedition in the next few years should check the latest arrangements before submitting a grant application.

The current MEF Application for Grant form was last updated in 2008 (Rev 04 dated Aug 08), this form must still be used for all new applications. (Submissions on old versions will not be accepted.) It is available to download by selecting ‘Support for Expeditions’ (from the MEF Homepage or clicking here), as are the ‘Guidelines’ (also Rev 04 dated Aug 08), the Referee’s form (Rev 03A) and the Information Sheet (dated Aug 08). However many times applicants have received MEF support in the past, they are requested to read these carefully before submitting a new application. Thank you
