Thalay Sagar 2023

Having undertaken a successful expedition to the Gangotri in 2018, Buckingham was inspired to return in the hope of making the first ascent of the south-east ridge of Thalay Sagar (6904m). An attempt was made on this objective between 20-24 May but, despite climbing a new line to the ridge itself, the team were ultimately turned back by adverse snow conditions. After recovering at base camp, they judged that they had enough time and resources available to make a repeat of the west ridge of Shivling (6543m). They made good progress to above Camp 3 but were unable to find a safe way through the serac band at 6200m and, running out of time, again took the decision to retreat.
